This is a wonderful area of countryside with some of the most beautiful, unspoilt scenery in the East Midlands. There are rolling hills and hidden valleys, gentle streams and nestling villages.

In 1949 it was decided that unspoilt areas of the countryside should be protected for future generations as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs).  In 2000 the importance of AONBs was re-emphasised, acknowledging that they, with the National Parks, form Britain's finest countryside.

Most of the Lincolnshire Wolds was designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1973 following considerable local campaigning.  This designation means the landscape is some of Britain's finest countryside.  It is a living, working landscape, with woodland, grassland and abandoned chalk pits providing important habitats for rare flowers and wildlife.

As well as the text lines, three sculpted figures were created who are seen discovering, contemplating and understanding the Meridian Line which is represented by a steel ribbon engraved with text, that appears and disappears as it traces the path of the Line through and around the town. The context of this particular text line changed for the worse following the later erection of a second, quite unrelated mark alongside it.

  • Bottomley Distillers

    Адрес:
    Louth LN11 0ZW, UK .

We are a family owned distillery with a heritage that dates back to the 1950's with the original Mr Stansfield Bottomley.

Mr Bottomley was a small scale whisky producer, beginning in West Yorkshire before moving on to Lincolnshire in the early 1980's.

Alan Bottomley, his youngest son, was always fascinated by the production of spirit. In 2016, inspired by this inherited skill and the rise in the craft market, he decided to modernise those nearly lost techniques. With the agreement of partner Amy and their daughter Molly, Lincolnshire's oldest distillery was founded.

Set in the quaint market town of Louth in the Lincolnshire Wolds, we now produce our award winning brand, Pin Gin, along with white label projects. Most excitingly, we have just started casking Mr Bottomleys' original recipe - the only Lincolnshire Single Malt Whisky.

  • Humber Bridge

    Адрес:
    Humber Bridge, United Kingdom .

For centuries the Humber Estuary was a barrier to trade and development between the two banks. Local interests campaigned for over a hundred years for the construction of a bridge or tunnel across. There were ferries across the Estuary, but the route by road involved going to Goole, which is 29 miles from Hull and 53 miles from Grimsby.

Approval for the construction of a suspension bridge was granted in 1959 with the passing of the Humber Bridge Act and the creation of the Humber Bridge Board, although it was not until 1972 that work finally began. The reasons why a suspension bridge was chosen were twofold. First, the Humber Estuary has a shifting bed and the navigable channel along which ships can travel is always changing. Therefore, a suspension bridge with no support piers in mid-stream would not obstruct the estuary.  Second, because of the geology and topography of the area, the cost of constructing a tunnel would have been excessive.

Work on the construction took eight years, during which time upwards of one thousand workers were employed at times of peak activity.  Traffic first crossed the bridge on 24th June 1981 and on 17th July 1981 Her Majesty the Queen performed the formal opening ceremony.

The Bridge provided an opportunity for the Humber region to realise its potential in commercial and industrial development. The journey from Hull to Grimsby, for example, was reduced from 82 miles to 42.
